The only mature ( and flowering /seeding ) specimens i’m currently familiar with are those in Kopsick’s collection. You did not get a palm that was basically bare root and a palm you specifically said you did not want!!! You got an amazing holy grail palm at a discount price.

Number 1 on my personal list of favorite feather-leaved / crown shafted palms so i completely understand the allure / desire to grow one ( …or a few, lol ).. They will feel heavier than the empty seeds as well. When looking at seeds on the Kopsick specimen(s), they will have a look that falls somewhere between those off Veitchia, and those off Foxtails. As far as I know it is possible for these two to hybridize.

From the pic seems like your palm flew across the country unharmed. Actually,light variegation is not a bad thing. Premier has sargentii seedlings and 7gal vinifera but they don’t know how to ship.

• Foxy Lady palms are incredibly fast growing palms and I think yours has a fighting chance if you get it in the ground ASAP and keep it’s rootball watered.
• Do you know if this palm was field grown, dug up, and then placed in its pot?
• I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits?
• As Dean says, if it doesn’t budge after a week or two of this shock, you may have a dead palm and one day the crownshaft will just collapse on you along with any green material that remains.
• I have a couple of other Foxy Ladies that I got roughly at the same time which each shoe different characteristics, but I digress from the issue.

I moved the pot to a shadier spot in my yard and applied copious water this morning, and went home at lunch and gave it another soaking. A plant like this that makes tons of roots hates being in a pot made for Hawaii or FL. The pool fence isn’t nearly high enough for any shade for the entire plant, and it looks like the leaves are getting full sun most of the day, probably with low humidity.
Some died at seedling stage, and others just died a slow death, even though they were all grown in shade. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies.

• Boron deficiency has been identified as the cause of palm leaning syndrome.
• Initially that doesn’t look like the LPS I’ve experienced or seen; I think I would be more worried about the dark weeping spots.
• Also the variegation seems to be a morphological example of hybrid decline as the greens show hybrid vigor.
• For the past few months, specimens are in the 1gal pot size, with the palm being around a 1’ in height, most are variegated form.
• I have got palms from Flouibunda and jungle music and never had the problem I had with this palm of you are going to ship palms at least learn how to pack them!!!
• There’s been a couple times where large all green forms have been available, but it hasn’t been too often.
• This is a holy grail palm for many of us PTers.

Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms. They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun. Yep, I was told it’s the mother plant genes that determine the fruit/seed so you can’t tell an F1 hybrid without growing it! Seed from a foxtail palm will only look like foxtail seeds even if something else is going in the seed. But I have had a foxy lady from came off of one of my foxtails….
I used a 4 foot bamboo stick I bought at Home foxy gold casino Depot and tied it to the broken leaf. Mine’s established and I still water it almost daily. Secondly, drought tolerance is typically referring to in ground established plants. I’ve always heard that Foxy Lady’s like sun and are somewhat drought tolerant… From what I understand, this tree has been in the pot all along and was not recently potted from a field grown specimen.
So after a couple weeks of treatment, the remaining leaves are browning but I have noticed some minimal growth (a couple millimeters) of the spear. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse. That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang?

The seeds that Mike Evans germinated were F2, there is no guarantee they will be Wodveitchias. Pretty sure they keep their variegation, at this stage we can already see the difference between the variegated lot and the greenies. I had about 7 seeds so I just planted them all, one popped. I have 6 mature foxy ladies and all but 2 are variegated. Difficult losing palms, but the more palms you grow, over time, we lose some; that’s how it goes.

Are Foxy Lady palms sterile?

A guy in my area has them for sale pick up at 200 for a baby 1 gallon pot , he had 4 now he has 3  , i got one today  and I am looking forward to watching it grow Regardless, good luck and hopefully you’ll be able to get a hold of this great palm sooner rather than later.. Bigger ” seeder ” at Kopsick sits close to where the collection’s Veitchia grove is located. I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded. If you’re up to a good challenge, Kopsick Palm – Arboretum in St. Pete has a few specimens, at least one that can / has produced seed. Or is there anyone on this forum growing the legendary tree?
Foxtails that I’ve grown all seem to throw one spear and sit for a long time (weeks to months), at which point they resume normal growth. Apparently when the greenies are much older they can also put out the odd variegated leaf. I ask because I have 3 one leaf seedlings and they all have variegation so I’m just curious if they’ll all keep this as adults /topic/33571-producing-wodveitchia-seed/

They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years. I planted a 1 gallon Cyphophoenix elgans to the east of it about 3-4 years ago, so its just starting to gain some momentum. Sorry to hear this…..time to edit and replace.

The seeds all had 2 white racing stripes. Therefore, you would expect the foxtails to have the wider leaves. Been in pots in the greenhouse for a couple years, very hard to tell. Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time.
If you know anyone looking who would make a good palm parent send em my way. It’s in a 15 gal but it ideally should go in the ground soon, it’s filled in that pot already. Alas, the time has come. Already have an account?
